How it works
Modern birthstones were standardized in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers and updated multiple times - hence the doublings for June, October, November and December. Birth flowers come from Victorian tradition, when people communicated emotions through the "language of flowers".
Fun facts
- The diamond, April\'s stone, is the hardest natural substance known (10 on Mohs scale).
- The pearl, June\'s stone, is the only "stone" produced by a living being - the oyster.
- The oldest documented birthstone is garnet, found in Egyptian tombs 5,000 years old.
